Pizza…a Mediterranean Staple. It is healthy for so many reasons and it is tasty for so many more 🙂 I have recently began to make pizza from scratch. It is a lot yummier, healthier and cost effective. Below is a recipe for the dough and the homemade pizza sauce. You can add any toppings you would like. Bake for ~20 minutes in the oven at 350F and you are set to go 🙂
- 0.25 ounces active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- 1 cup warm water (~110F)
- 2.5 cups flour (white or wheat)
- 2.5 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350F.
2. In a medium bowl, add yeast and sugar then pour in the warm water. Let it stand until bubbly (about 10 minutes).
3. After 10 minutes, stir in flour, salt and oil.
4. Mix with a wooden spoon until smooth (about 10 minutes) and then let it rest for about 5-10 minutes.
5. Lightly flour your working space and turn dough out onto this floured surface. You can “turn” it by firmly pressing down flat with the palm of your hand. Fold the dough in half toward you like you are closing an envelope and then rotate the dough 90degrees and then repeat these steps. Once you are done kneading the dough, form a ball out of it.
6. Grease a pizza pan with olive oil (I use the spray) and roll out the dough.
 Now onto the sauce 🙂
Ingredients
- 1 can tomato sauce (15 ounces)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder or 3 cloves of fresh minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons fresh Romano cheese
- 2Â teaspoons fresh Parmesean cheese
- 1 teaspoon white sugar
- Salt & Pepper to taste
Since we are using dried ingredients, make sure they are fresh and have not been sitting on your spice rack for too long…check the smell.
Directions
- Add the tomato sauce and the spices into a medium saucepan on the stovetop on medium heat.
2. Stir over medium heat for about 5 minutes.
3. Place sauce on top of the pizza dough.
 Toppings
1. Add fresh mozzarella cheese, veggies or meat toppings as you desire 🙂
Enjoy…..

This pizza looks delicious! Do you know if substituting a gluten free flour, like brown rice flour, would work in making the pizza crust? I know the crust wouldn’t rise like a normal crust, but would it stay together and make a “flatbread” pizza?

Hi Jen….I think it would work. I have actually tried it before.

This pizza looks so good. I am not good at all making my own dough, breads, or pastries. Sauces I will only make from scratch. It must go along with baking which I do not do well. I will try it and hopefully it will come out just as good as yours.

I always make my own pizza as anything else is definitely not healthy! If made from dough to tomato sauce, and fresh toppings (avoid too much cheese also), all the way through. Pizza like this is a Friday night treat in my household. But, while Mediterranean in theory, the pizza has gone a long way from its roots to include a lot of mega fatty northern culture’s food fads on top. I live in the Med, in Malta, and know all too well that a Med diet can be very unhealthy too! If you want some inspiration about wholesome toppings (leaving meat and cholesterol laden dairy out) here’s a veggie garden pizza using the ‘best of the Med’ veg on top. http://www.maltainsideout.com/15947/going-green-seeing-red-over-pizza/
Keep up the good work on Suzyeats, but do remember that no Med diet is healthy these days – it’s a dream away, an ideal. Live in this part of the world and you’ll see!
